May 2024 Horror Preview

May this Horror Preview be the best one yet!

Tarot: In this far-fetched and hokey supernatural thriller, a group of young kids discover a haunted tarot deck not knowing the evil they may unleash in the process of finding their fortunes. Unfortunately, good reviews didn’t seem to be in the cards for newcomers Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg – their feature film debut currently sits at a very rough 12% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes with an audience score that isn’t much better.

While I’m all for making up your own mind, this film already looked like a tough sell for me based on the trailer alone. Is this a misunderstood masterpiece and future cult classic or is Tarot destined for the bargain bin?

I Saw the TV Glow: Fresh off the divisive indie darling WE’RE ALL GOING TO THE WORLD’S FAIR, Jane Schoenbrun returns with this psychological chiller about two teenagers obsessed with their favorite tv show only for the lines of fiction and reality to blur when the show is mysteriously and unexplainably canceled.

While I haven’t seen Jane’s debut yet, this kind of meta-horror seems right up my alley. I’m getting some big CANDLE COVE vibes and I’m here for it.

MIND BODY SPIRIT:

The official synopsis reads “Anya, an aspiring yoga influencer, embarks on a ritual practice left behind by her estranged grandmother. She documents the practice on her YouTube channel for the world to watch, allowing her audience intimate access to her journey. But what starts as a spiritual self-help guide evolves into something much more sinister. As Anya becomes obsessed with the mysterious power of the practice, she unwittingly unleashes an otherworldly entity that begins to take control of her life – and her videos. Now Anya must race to unlock the truth before her descent into madness threatens to consume her mind, body, and spirit. By the time she reveals the true nature of the ritual, will it be too late?”

This sounds like a fun spin on the found footage genre for the livestream/influencer era. I personally cannot wait to check this one out when it hits streaming later this month.

The Strangers: Chapter 1:

The latest horror franchise to receive the legacy sequel/prequel/reboot/reimagining treatment is The Strangers.

While the original was an exciting twist on the home invasion genre and the sequel was…well, the sequel – can the first of this new trilogy capture the magic of the original? Director Renny Harlin (DIE HARD 2, CLIFFHANGER) sure hopes so. The film stars Madelaine Petsch (RIVERDALE, SIGHTLESS) and Gabriel Basso (SUPER 8, HILLBILLY ELEGY)

In A Violent Nature: Last but certainly not least, the horror film that swept Sundance with its deliberate pacing, extreme violence, and unique gimmick of shooting the entire film from the perspective of the killer himself – In A Violent Nature is a brilliant love letter and subversion of the slasher genre that looks like a must-see for any horror fan.
