May 2023 Horror Preview
May-be you’ll find the perfect horror movie to watch this month as April showers bring May splatters! Moving on with the preview, it’s gonna be MAY!
May 9th
The Curse of Wolf Mountain: First up is an ultra-low budget slasher from former FULL HOUSE star David Lipper – it looks like they’re going for that late 90s/early 2000s aesthetic a la I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER etc.
Bolstering performances from some heavy-weight horror legends, Tobin Bell (of the SAW franchise) and Danny Trejo (MACHETE, ANACONDA, ROB ZOMBIE’S HALLOWEEN), the film stars Lipper himself as AJ, a young man on the hunt for the truth about his parent’s murders. Will he get more than he bargained for when he returns to the scene of the crime? Find out when THE CURSE OF WOLF MOUNTAIN drops on Digital/VOD this month.
May 19th
Outpost: Speaking of actors turned filmmakers, Joe Lo Truglio (BROOKLYN 99, RENO 911, SUPERBAD) makes his writing/directing debut with this slow-burn (pun intended) thriller about a woman trading her abusive past for a promising future as a forest ranger and firefighter in the desolate mountains of Idaho.
Reminds me quite a bit of Taylor Sheridan’s THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD albeit in a more A24-esque psychological horror sort of way.
May 23rd
Gremlins: Secret of the Mogwai: Remember GOOSEBUMPS? Maybe ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK? or even KRAMPUS from a few years back? I, for one, fully support getting kids on the horror train young.
Hopefully, this animated reimagining (and prequel to) the 1984 horror comedy classic coming to HBO Max this month will whet the appetite of future horror aficionados everywhere.
May 26th
The Wrath of Becky:
Last but not least,
SXSW darling THE WRATH OF BECKY is a splatter fest Nazisploitation thriller in the same vein as 2015’s GREEN ROOM (with a girl boss John Wick style twist)- although the film admittedly looks a bit derivative, I’m always up for a skinhead skull bashing good time.
The return of genre icon Seann William Scott (FINAL DESTINATION, SOUTHLAND TALES, etc) is just the cherry on top.
